If you time your trip just right in spring, the trip from the airstrip to Whitmore Canyon will be filled with the color of blooming desert flowers including Sego Lilies and Desert Yellow Daisies. The overlook stands 3,000 feet above the river. Enjoy amenities like restrooms and showers, grills and fire pits, and access to the water. It would be less of a challenge counter-clockwise if you were driving something you were worried about getting stuck in, as most of the muddy parts would be down hill that way. You can ride along and right up to this spot by way of the St. George Drive OHV Trail. Milts Mile is located inside of Sand Hollow State Park. Drive south about 38.5 miles, staying right when a road to a radio tower diverges left after about 14.3 miles. Views of cliffs, volcanic rock, and desert from the Whitmore Trail. Black Rock Canyon OHV Trail is located east of the St. George Regional Airport. Close by where we stay at the Ledges so very convenient! I would 100% do this trail again, but Id prepare to mitigate the risk better. Coincidentally, about this same time tourists began running the Colorado River in rubber rafts. The trail improves after the first several miles into a great mix of woopdy doos, some switchbacks, a couple creek crossings, and some southern Utah forest. That way, youll have a reference to ensure youre heading in the right direction. This is the roughest part of the trail as youll be driving over a lava field. Part of the problem is that there is no place to turn around. The good news is that (baring GPS directions, which are usually wrong) the road isnt hard to follow and there really arent confusing turns or side-roads major junctions are well-marked, and you wont be confused by minor junctions. E- educate yourself- study up on the area before entering. Be wary of monsoon rains in July and August (or rain anytime), which will make the road impassible. Stay right for another 8.1 miles and stay right again for another 3.1 miles to the Mt. Take Exit 2 toward UT-7; stay in the left lane on the exit to stay left to cross the bridge and then continue straight on UT-7 West. From the Mount Trumbull Schoolhouse, turn south (left if coming from the Toroweap area, straight if coming from St. George) and follow the road. There some 200 species of the genus Opuntia.
